Nano server is 20 to 25 times smaller than a full version of Windows Server 2016 with desktop experience. Nano server images need to be pre-created and I will show you 2 different methods to do it. The first method uses PowerShell  and the second method uses a free tool called Nano Server Image Builder from Microsoft. Both methods will have the dependency on Windows 10 ADK.

[What do you need?]

  • Windows 10 ADK
  • Nano Server Image Builder
  • Windows PowerShell
  • Windows Server 2016 ISO

[Method 1: Using PowerShell]

[Creation Steps]

Please choose full hd mode 1080p for optimal viewing

  1. Mount Windows Server 2016 ISO
  2. Copy NanoServer folder to C:\NanoServer
  3. Create a temporary working directory C:\img
  4. Run PowerShell as Administrator
  5. Set PowerShell execution policy to unrestricted
  6. Import the NanoServer PowerShell module found in C:\NanoServer
  7. Create NanoServer images using the New-NanoServerImage command

  1. Download the Nano Server Image Builder from here
  2. Install the Nano Server Image Builder
  3. Run the Nano Server Image Builder
